Lettuce Turnip the Beet

Posted on July 10, 2012

Party rockin' in the hous...er...kitchen tonight. Sometimes I get so excited about delicious, healthy food that I could fist pump about it. “Yea boyeee, I love kale, ence, ence, ence.” I saw my good friend from home, Meghan, last week and she gave me the best gift of all time that sums up my fist pumping for food craze. See below.

Doesn't get any better than that, huh? It's the perfect combination of my three loves: juicing, hitting the dance floor (even though my moves have seriously deteriorated thanks to my hip - much less booty shaking and more focus on arm movements) and neon. This shirt came at a perfect time because I guarantee we could all use a little juice in our lives after a long July 4th week. I know I can.

Six Months of Love, Birthdays, Hips & Chocolate

Posted on June 28, 2012

Holy smokes. Long time no write, huh?! I've missed this. I've missed you. Hell, I've missed talking about myself! I visit my blog every once in a while to share recipes and when I went on tonight I was SHOCKED it has been over six months since my last post. Where does the time go?

Before I dive back into recipe sharing, I want to bring you up to speed on what I've been up to the past six months. I know you are just SO curious as to where I've been,  so here it goes - my most recent timeline of exciting events. I have to say, A LOT has happened. Enjoy.

January 7 – One of my best friend's, Kait, got MARRIED! She was the most stunning bride I have ever seen and it was quite the Villanova reunion.

Indulge Without the Bulge

Posted on December 12, 2011

Cozied up on my couch in an oversized wool sweater watching Christmas movies, admiring our lit up Christmas tree, enjoying a freshly made raw date square in my left hand, a cold glass of almond milk in my right, and a warm and fuzzy feeling running around inside of me...I.absolutely.LOVE.the.holidays. Despite the one too many alcoholic beverages (including peppermint patty shots whoops) and brie dip I had at Colby's Christmas party last night, I am loving life right now.

A little blurry, but here's me and Eric at the party. Adorbs, right? Especially JC in the background!

SuperFood Me

Posted on November 7, 2011

Have you missed me? I've missed you. It's been a while since my last post and I know you've been waiting with bated breath thinking to yourself, “Oh where, oh where, could Jamie be?”

Well I'll tell ya where I've been.

The past month has been a whirlwind full of fun-filled activities.

I've been living in the mountains surrounded by nature meditating and practicing yoga. Just kidding. For a Health Coach, that's what you might expect but I have to admit I've been welcoming the fall season with my party hat on. And it's been fun.

First stop: Las Vegas

Why: To celebrate one of my best friend's bacherlorette parties.

Decisions, decisions...

Posted on October 3, 2011

Life is full of decisions. Some simple, some tough, some big, some small. When you’re little, your parents make decisions for you. What color Oshkosh B’Gosh overalls to wear, what color converse (hot pink high-tops preferably), what vegetables to eat with dinner, and what school to attend.  Now that I’m an adult (ha – that sounds funny), life is a little more complicated and life’s decisions are left up to me: What am I going to wear today? What I am I going to eat today? Should I walk to work or take the subway? Hair straight or wavy? (If they all could be that simple…)

I am pretty indecisive so I’m not sure I like this part of life very much.

Last Wednesday, my dooms day, my doc gave me the MRI results for my hip. After two years of pain, someone finally decided that I needed one to figure out what in the hell is going on. “So based on your MRI, you have a labral tear. Blah blah blah. You have been doing all the right things but have found no relief.  blah blah blah. So it looks like the only option left is SURGERY.” Umm, what? Can you repeat that? Tears started to fall –the awkward, embarrassing, ugly ones that make you breathe all funky and look god awful, and for some reason you can’t find it in you to stop - and I blacked out everything else he said.

Good Mood Food

Posted on September 12, 2011

I love this time of year for three reasons. The three “F’s”: Football Sundays. Frizz-free hair. Fall foods. Oh and one more…it’s “F”-ing Fabulous to share the sidewalks with happy people in NYC who are not Frowning through sweat pouring from their Foreheads. This time of year also brings my attention to another set of three “F’s”: Friends, Family and Firefighters who died ten years ago on 9/11.

Today marks the tenth time our nation has stopped to reflect on this defining day. A day to grieve and to commemorate all the loved ones lost during the 9/11 tragedies. When we go to sleep tonight, we will say goodnight to a decade that produced war, major shifts in national security, and drastic changes in our everyday lives.  Tomorrow we, as a nation, will wake up to new beginnings. Open the doors into a new chapter, a new decade that will allow everyone to move forward and rebuild their hearts.

No matter who you are, we could all use a little rebuilding. A change of season is always the perfect time to do just that. Whether you need to rebuild from drinking too many margaritas this summer (skinny girl ones, obvi), eating too many bowls of ice cream because of a recent breakup, watching too many Lifetime movies in one weekend because of the rain, or losing a loved one, rebuilding is good for the body, mind, and soul.

The Dog Days of Summer

Posted on August 29, 2011

Oh, the dog days of summer. Hot, long, and glorious. Sunshine, cookouts, and smoothies. Beach time, boat time, and cocktail time. Summer's end is approaching, but the dog days aren't over yet. Unless Mother Nature decides to rain on our parade again. What is your problem, girlfriend?  You aren't giving much love to the dog days. An east coast earthquake. A northeastern hurricane. What’s next? Volcanoes out of the Appalachian Mountains? You’re forgiven but go easy on us, will ya? Peace and love for all, jeez.

Speaking of dogs, in my next life, I want to come back as one. Not a care in the world, constant back scratches, unconditional love, long walks, endless cuddle sessions. Oh, and no responsibilities like prepping for a hurricane.

This past weekend, I babysat my nephew-dog, Buck, and he reaffirmed my feelings that dogs are the luckiest beings on earth. He didn’t care that the wind was picking up, or rain started pounding harder on the windows, or that Mike Seidel was being blown sideways in the storm. All he cared about was being surrounded by reliable cuddlers, back scratchers, and an occasional game of fetch with his favorite stuffed giraffe.

How stinkin’ cute is he?

Confessions of a Health Coach - Part 1

Posted on August 22, 2011

I confess to the following sins I committed this weekend…

I ate almost a half of a pizza. Whatever, it was vegan.

I totally botched a raw chocolate dessert. I felt defeated. However, they are still in my freezer and I’ve managed to eat two of them. They must not be THAT bad.

I made up for my failed recipe by getting back at the chocolate and made non-chocolate raw date squares that are PHENOM. (Recipe below). Take that chocolate! I had two for breakfast this morning, and one for dessert tonight.

I went to the movies with Eric and saw Crazy, Stupid Love.  I fell in love with Ryan Gosling (Sorry Eric :-P)

I went to the movies with my roommate and saw The Help. I cried for 45 minutes. My eyes are still puffy.

I went to the movies twice? Wow.

I watched two Lifetime movies.

I lied to you, I watched three Lifetime movies. I’m so embarrassed. (That’s a total of five movies in two days. OMG.)

In between movies I ate a spoonful of almond butter.

I got a cortisone shot in my hip which is against my “holistic healing” beliefs because I don’t like putting foreign things in my body. Food is my medicine gosh darnit.

I got the cortisone shot because this incredibly hot doctor talked me into it. I’m talking McSteamy style. (Sorry Eric :-P) He was the one who had to put it in my hip, so he saw my undies. Wish I had been more prepared and worn cuter ones.

Home Sweet Home

Posted on August 14, 2011

I don’t know what it is about being home, but I always feel more like a real human living a real, normal life. Maybe it’s the fact that my room at home is a little bigger than 10x10, or my window unit air conditioner isn’t blowing in my face all night. Maybe it’s the glorious view of the beautiful bay, and not the glorious view of a big tree outside my living room window (although I seriously get excited about that in the city – you city folk can understand). Maybe it’s the 30+ family homemade dinners, made in a real kitchen, with real kitchen appliances, served on super cute platters (my Mom has about 43 of them). Whatever it is, the phrase “home sweet home” couldn’t be more accurate. Home really is, so sweet.

You know what else is sweet? These amazing Raw Almond Joy Balls I decided to make for my Dad. The last time I made my Dad a raw dessert he said, “Shugz, (that’s what he calls me – think short for “Sugar”) you know what’s so great about these?” The anticipation was killing me because I knew he’d be a tough crowd to please. He paused for about 20 seconds.  And then he so kindly said, “They make me appreciate a big delicious juicy cheeseburger.”  That was NOT the response I was hoping for! Since then, I have been determined to make him something that he loves, and something that doesn’t make him crave a cheeseburger. And guess what? I did. (He probably still craves the burger but at least he didn’t voice that)

Blizzard in the Summer? Yes, please.

Posted on August 8, 2011

Holy best dessert ever. Seriously. Wow. It’s to die for.  And it’s vegan. If Mr. Meat Eater Man is reading this, stay with me. You will love it, too. That’s a pinky promise. I am so excited to tell you about it that I’m just going to jump right in.

It was Casey’s (best friend/roomie) birthday celebration so it gave me the perfect excuse to test out a new raw (mostly), vegan dessert. She loves her sweets just as much as I do so I wanted to make something that she would really really really love. Let me tell ya, it was a success. She shouted mid-bite, “This is the best dessert I have ever had in my whole life.” Coming from a sweet connoisseur, that means something!

I know the suspense is killing you so here it goes…

You’ve all been to Dairy Queen, right? And I assume you’ve indulged in one of their blizzards. And I assume after you eat it you feel like total poo (Literally, you might poo). Well I have the perfect solution. A Peanut Butter Chocolate “Blizzard” that’s dairy-free, soy-free, gluten-free and totally delicious, and doesn’t leave you feeling like you need to take the Browns to the super bowl (too much?).

I got the idea from my favorite blog, Oh She Glows. She owns a vegan bakery so she always has awesome recipes. I tweaked the recipe a little to my liking.
